Grandma and Me: Aprons

My granddaughters are pretty special to me. I have three living near by, one is a baby still but the other two spend alternate weekends with me so we can have special time together, one on one. One of the things we began this month was the "Grandma & me Farmgirls at Heart" club.

I usually wear an apron doing things around the farm. Yes even sewing to keep things neat and clean. It has rubbed off on the granddaughters and they like wearing aprons as well. So out of fabric in my studio I designed these little aprons.

I asked each girl to draw a picture of them and me. Then I embroidered the pictures on scrap broadcloth and blanket stitched by machine onto the apron.

They are now working on merit badges. The 6 year old has three of the five buttons she has chosen sewn on her first badge.
The four year old has accomplished her first badge of making playdough from flour, water and oil. I have to make the badge still and attach it.

It makes it fun to do something special just the"Grandma and me".

Pansy Quilt

Its done!
When I think of all the years it sat as a quilt top in the basement in a Rubbermaid container with drier sheets tucked around it.
I finally finished quilting the whole quilt.

Green Coat Dress

I found this fabric in a quilting store in the city that was closing up.
It 40% off the orginal price but still over $11.m when I bought it.
Orginally I bought it to make a blouse for me, but I landed out smocking this dress in a size 4.
front view

My second confession would be that I have owned this dress pattern since the early 1990's but never made it, because it "looked" too difficult to make.
The pattern is by A Garden of Smocking called Poppy.

I took three colours from the dress fabric and smocked a design with these colours.
It was a lot of smocking and I hadn't the heart to install pockets as it would take away from a rather fancy dress.

Garden Smocked Bonnet

This bonnet was a custom made bonnet for a client.
There was ever so much of bullion roses and leaves on it.
I love the look of it.

Turquoise Smocked Dress

The smocking
I found this fabric in a quilting store. It was a real reasonable price at $6.00 a meter. The colouring is a dark turquoise and has small floral with  ladybugs and bees on it. I thought it would be cute smocked for my real blond girl.

I took the colours from the dress and smocked this my own design on it. I normally would NOT smock red as this is my least favourite colour.
lines pulled out and yoke attached
The dress patterns is Sweet Pea from A Garden of Smocking, now out of print.
Dress being worn.

Victorian Shirtwaist in Creme

This shirtwaist I made in the fall from fabric I bought on holidays on Prince Edward Island. I was told I "had" to go to the fabric shop by Summerside. My Dearest was not too pleased about the wait as it was past his lunch time. Feeling compelled to be quick was so hard with so many choices. I wish I could remember the name of the shop but the fabrics were wonderful. I bought two lenghts of this fabric for this very blouse.
I tea stained Swiss lace and made it part of the yoke. I used twin needles to do the in-between fancy lines.
It turned out perfect and fits wonderfully. I usually wear it tucked in. The waist sash which it sewn at the back and ties to the front gives it "poof". I feel very elegant wearing it.
